Jiangxi Institute of Ecological Civilization, Nanchang University

Jiangxi Institute of Ecological Civilization of Nanchang University (hereinafter referred to as "the Institute") was founded in March 2018. It is an university-level independent scientific research institution co-established by Nanchang University and Jiangxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission. In 2025, it was approved as a Key High-end Think Tank of Jiangxi Province and included in the "AMI" Think Tank List of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In 2023, it was accredited as a National Expert Service Base for "Two Mountains" Conversion and Ecological Product Value Realization Research and Demonstration in Jiangxi by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.

Based on the overall national strategy for ecological civilization construction and oriented towards building a modernization featuring harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, the Institute conducts basic research on key scientific issues, innovative and applied technology R&D, and policy consultation in such fields as "Two Mountains" conversion and ecological product value realization, basin carbon neutrality theories and technologies, basin ecology and systematic protection and restoration of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes and grasses, environmental pollution remediation and solid waste resource utilization, green industries, and institutional mechanisms for ecological civilization. It aims to build a national industry-education integration base and a national expert service base integrating "government-industry-university-research-application" for "Two Mountains" conversion and ecological product value realization, and develop into a core technological platform, a think tank service center and a talent cultivation hub for ecological civilization construction in Jiangxi and even the whole country. Guided by advanced technologies, the Institute supports the construction of the National Ecological Civilization Pilot Zone (Jiangxi) and the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and serves the technological and decision-making needs of the CPC Jiangxi Provincial Committee and Jiangxi Provincial People's Government in building a highland for national ecological civilization pilot zone construction and a high-standard "Jiangxi Model" of Beautiful China.

As a Key High-end Think Tank of Jiangxi Province, the Institute is committed to serving the decision-making of the CPC Jiangxi Provincial Committee and Jiangxi Provincial People's Government. It focuses on major theoretical and practical issues related to the province's reform and development in the field of ecological civilization construction, such as carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, mechanisms for "Two Mountains" conversion and ecological product value realization, the highland of national ecological civilization construction, and the "Jiangxi Model" of Beautiful China. It carries out research on theoretical methods and strategic decision-making, providing strategic support and policy consultation for the CPC Jiangxi Provincial Committee and Jiangxi Provincial People's Government in the field of ecological civilization construction.

As the National Expert Service Base for "Two Mountains" Conversion and Ecological Product Value Realization Research and Demonstration in Jiangxi approved by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the Institute takes Wuning County of Jiujiang City as the demonstration area. It conducts research on technologies and path models for "Two Mountains" conversion and ecological product value realization from the aspects of improving the supply capacity of ecological products and their value realization paths, digital technologies and intelligent management of ecological products, and institutional mechanism construction for ecological product value realization. It thoroughly explores the ecological product value realization path featuring "farmers as the main body, government as the leader, enterprises as participants, and market-oriented operation", and innovatively builds a three-level ecological product value conversion platform in Wuning County with the structure of "county-level headquarters, township-level branches, and village-level outlets". The Institute systematically constructs the industrial and cultural systems of ecological products, promotes the "Five-in-One Integration" work system of "defining property rights, industries, quantity, value and standards", develops the digital technology and intelligent management technology system for ecological products, accelerates achievement transformation, trains grassroots talents, boosts rural revitalization, provides research demonstration and expert services for the national work of "Two Mountains" conversion and ecological product value realization, and offers technical support and talent cultivation for grassroots units to carry out related work.

The Institute currently has 36 researchers, including 18 with senior titles (professors and researchers), 8 with associate senior titles (associate professors, associate researchers and senior engineers), and 10 with intermediate titles (lecturers, assistant researchers, postdoctoral fellows, etc.). The talent team includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 chief scientist of the national "973 Program" and 1 chief scientist of the national key R&D program, as well as 12 recipients of various provincial-level talent titles.

Major Research Fields of the Institute

1. Ecological Civilization Big Data Technology: Remote sensing assessment of environmental resources, digitalization of ecological products, optimization of spatial patterns of ecological industries, big data simulation and information display of ecological environment, etc.

2. "Two Mountains" Conversion and Ecological Product Value Realization: Theories and methods of "Two Mountains" conversion, monitoring and assessment technologies of ecological products, technologies for improving the supply capacity of ecological products, construction of ecological product value conversion platforms, industries and cultures of ecological products, mechanisms for ecological product value realization, etc.

3. Basin Carbon Neutrality Theories and Technologies: Monitoring and assessment of ecological carbon sinks, carbon emission estimation and emission reduction pathways of industries and enterprises, carbon neutrality of industrial systems at industry and regional levels, carbon cycles of basin economic and social systems, coupled carbon source-sink systems of society-economy-nature, etc.

4. Basin Ecology and Systematic Protection and Restoration of Mountains, Rivers, Forests, Farmlands, Lakes and Grasses: Functions and processes of basin ecosystems, ecological restoration and governance of river basins, improvement of ecosystem service functions, soil and water conservation, systematic protection and restoration of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasses and sands, etc.

5. Environmental Pollution Remediation and Solid Waste Resource Utilization: Water environmental pollution control technologies, simulation and control of agricultural non-point source pollution, site pollution remediation, soil pollution remediation, resource utilization of solid waste, etc.

6. Green Industries and Institutional Mechanisms for Ecological Civilization: Integrated development of "ecology+" industries, rice-fish projects, ecological resource ownership transactions and green finance, green, circular and low-carbon development, institutional systems for ecological civilization, etc.
