Nanchang University Postgraduate "Qianhu Research Forum": The 16th Supervisor Lecture Series (Session 206)

On November 27, Session 206 of the 16th Supervisor Lecture Series under Nanchang University’s Postgraduate "Qianhu Research Forum" was held at the Peng Feng Lecture Hall in the Environmental Building. Invited as the keynote speaker for this lecture was Professor Liu Xiaojie, Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Resource Use and Environmental Remediation, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Her presentation, themed From Academic Papers to Consulting Reports: How to Complete the Last Mile of Scientific Research, aimed to help postgraduates understand that "scientific research is not limited to paper writing" and guide them to balance theoretical depth and practical value right from the topic selection stage.

Centering on core themes such as resource security, carbon neutrality and sustainable development, Professor Liu Xiaojie expounded the concept of "advancing main and auxiliary research lines in parallel" in scientific research. Meanwhile, starting from practical application demands, she sorted out scientific issues and, through research methods like scenario prediction and coupling simulation, explained how to transform basic research outcomes into consulting reports that serve national and regional development. In doing so, she revealed to the teachers and students present the pathway for scientific research achievements to move from the laboratory to the decision-making level.

Throughout the lecture, Professor Liu focused on research scenarios familiar to postgraduates. Instead of presenting a jumble of abstract concepts, she broke down key steps—such as "how to extract scientific issues from national needs" and "how to convert 'environmental effect data' in research projects into 'impact conclusions' in consulting reports"—into concrete procedures. This enabled postgraduates to directly apply these insights to their own research, strike a balance between "publishing papers" and "enhancing practical capabilities", and thus break the misconception that "publishing a paper is the end goal of scientific research".
