Introduction to the Environmental Engineering Program

Undergraduate Program · Four-Year Duration

Program Overview

The Environmental Engineering program began enrolling junior college students in 1986 and undergraduate students in 1993. It obtained the right to confer master's degrees in Environmental Engineering in 1996 and doctoral degrees in the same field in 2003. In 2006, it was granted the right to confer master's degrees under the first-level discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering. In 2009, it was approved to set up a postdoctoral research station for Environmental Science and Engineering, and in 2011, it became a doctoral program under the first-level discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering.
As a National First-Class Undergraduate Program Construction Site and a key discipline under the national "Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Project for Universities in Central and Western China", it is also a key discipline of Jiangxi Province during the "Tenth Five-Year Plan", "Eleventh Five-Year Plan", "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" periods and the "Double First-Class" initiative. It has been recognized as a Brand Major of Jiangxi Province, a Characteristic Major of Jiangxi Province, and a program under the Jiangxi Outstanding Engineers Training Plan. Having passed the national engineering education accreditation, the program has achieved international recognition with the signatory countries of the Washington Accord.
Currently, the program boasts first-class teaching and research platforms, including a provincial experimental teaching demonstration center, the Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Environment and Resource Utilization (Ministry of Education), the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Comprehensive Management and Resource Development, and the Jiangxi Institute of Ecological Civilization.
Devoted to addressing environmental problems and challenges arising from China's rapid development, the program aims to cultivate high-level technical and management talents with an international perspective, who are capable of solving complex environmental issues in China and mastering the relevant technical principles and engineering methods for environmental protection and improvement.
The program has a faculty of over 40 members, including 16 professors, 8 associate professors, 36 doctoral degree holders, and 25 teachers with overseas educational backgrounds. The faculty structure is well-balanced, and all members have rich engineering practice experience. Each year, the program secures approximately 6 million yuan in research funding and publishes more than 60 academic papers in renowned domestic and international journals, demonstrating solid research capabilities and conditions. It has also established a sound foundation for industry-university-research cooperation and collaborative talent cultivation with relevant enterprises in the field.

Program Objectives

Annually, the program enrolls 90–100 undergraduate students, divided into regular classes and the Outstanding Engineers Training Class. Relying on the Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Environment and Resource Utilization (Ministry of Education, established in 2004) and the Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Comprehensive Management and Resource Development (Jiangxi Provincial Department of Science and Technology, established in 2003), the program has 12 specialized laboratories available for undergraduate experimental teaching, with total equipment value exceeding 60 million yuan.
For a long time, the discipline has focused on basic research in ecological environment protection and comprehensive resource development and utilization in the Poyang Lake Basin, forming distinctive research directions with local characteristics: Lake Water Resources and Water Environment, Treatment and Resource Utilization of "Three Wastes" (wastewater, waste gas, solid waste), and Environmental Analysis and Pollution Chemistry. It holds industry advantages in water pollution control engineering and environmental assessment.
The program is designed to cultivate compound and innovative high-level professionals with coordinated development of "knowledge, ability, and personality", who possess the basic qualities and capabilities to engage in scientific research, engineering design, management, and planning in the field of environmental engineering. Graduates will master the knowledge of pollution prevention and control of urban water, air, noise, and solid waste, as well as water pollution control planning and water resource protection, and have the ability of lifelong learning and improvement.

Core Courses

The core courses of the Environmental Engineering program include: Water Pollution Control Engineering, Air Pollution Control Engineering, Solid Waste Treatment Engineering, Noise Control Engineering, Environmental Monitoring, and Environmental Assessment.

Career Prospects

Graduates of this program have three main pathways: further education, studying abroad, and employment. They can serve as high-level engineering and technical talents in the field of environmental engineering, working in government departments, planning departments, economic management departments, environmental protection authorities, public institutions, various design institutes, environmental engineering companies, industrial and mining enterprises, construction engineering companies, research institutions, and universities, engaging in planning, design, construction, management, education, and R&D work. They contribute to the social and economic development of Jiangxi Province and the whole country.
