Master's Program in Environmental Science and Engineering

Introduction to the Master's Program in Environmental Science and Engineering

The discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering at Nanchang University originated from the Environmental Engineering program established in 1986. The undergraduate program of Environmental Engineering started enrollment in 1993. It obtained the right to confer master's degrees in Environmental Engineering in 1996 and doctoral degrees in the same field in 2003. In 2006, it was granted the right to confer master's degrees under the first-level discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering. In 2009, it was approved to set up a postdoctoral research station for Environmental Science and Engineering, and in 2011, it became a doctoral program under the first-level discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering.

Rooted in Jiangxi Province and oriented to the whole country, the discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering at Nanchang University closely aligns with major national and local strategic needs such as ecological civilization construction, carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and the protection of the Yangtze River. Focusing on the technological frontier of the environmental field and key environmental issues at the basin, regional and industrial levels, it prioritizes research in areas including basin carbon neutrality, ecological environmental protection of Poyang Lake, resource recycling and pollution prevention, as well as key technologies and equipment for the synergistic reduction of pollution and carbon emissions. The discipline strives to cultivate high-level technical and management talents with an international perspective who can solve complex environmental problems, providing scientific and technological support and talent guarantee for Jiangxi to build a highland of ecological civilization construction and achieve regional sustainable development.

The discipline has a faculty of 48 members, including 2 recipients of national talent program honors, 14 professors, 21 associate professors, and 41 doctoral degree holders. Over the past five years, the discipline has secured more than 100 provincial and ministerial-level projects such as National Natural Science Foundation projects and major/key projects of the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Science and Technology. It has also completed over 30 million yuan worth of horizontal projects covering water treatment engineering, synergistic pollution and carbon reduction, carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, and the value realization of ecological products. More than 100 academic papers have been published in renowned domestic and international journals.

The discipline is equipped with a number of high-level scientific research platforms, including the Engineering Research Center of Basin Carbon Neutrality (Ministry of Education), the Key Laboratory of Poyang Lake Environment and Resource Utilization (Ministry of Education), the Jiangxi Institute of Ecological Civilization, and the Environmental Testing Center of Nanchang University. It boasts well-established research infrastructure, with more than 40 teaching and specialized laboratories available for the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the degree program. The total laboratory area exceeds 2,600 square meters, the total value of instruments and equipment amounts to over 60 million yuan, and the collection of books and materials exceeds 200,000 volumes, providing strong support for the discipline’s experimental teaching and scientific research.
